Blood alcohol content

Did you know?

IMPORTANT: This is a rough mathematical estimate only. Do not use this calculator to make decisions about driving. Actual blood alcohol concentration varies significantly based on metabolism, medications, food, hydration, and individual physiology. The only safe amount of alcohol before driving is zero. Impairment begins well before the 0.08% legal limit.

Good to know

Impairment starts long before the legal limit. Research shows measurable impairment in judgment and reaction time at BAC levels as low as 0.02%, well below the 0.08% threshold. At 0.05%, coordination begins to decline. The 0.08% limit is a legal line, not a safety threshold.

Nothing speeds up alcohol elimination except time. The liver metabolizes alcohol at approximately 0.015% BAC per hour. Coffee doesn't help. Cold showers don't help. Food doesn't help once alcohol is absorbed. If your estimated BAC is 0.08%, you need roughly 5-6 hours to reach 0.00%.

Standard drink sizes may not match what you consumed. One standard drink contains about 14 grams of pure alcohol: 12 oz regular beer (5% ABV), 5 oz wine (12% ABV), or 1.5 oz spirits (40% ABV). A strong craft beer, generous wine pour, or mixed drink with multiple shots counts as more than one standard drink.
